1066: Year of Viking Destiny – Playing Norway (Deity)<\/h1>\n

\"Purple<\/a>It is said the viking army made landing with 300 longships. Their army was defeated though, King Harald Hardrada<\/a> fallen in battle. Broken, the vikings returned on only 24 longships. Their failed invasion of England marking the end of the Viking Age, with Harald Hardrada having been the last great Viking!!! *goose bumps*<\/p>\n

His story is incredibly exciting, having been exiled, serving as mercenary in the Kievan Rus and Constantinople<\/a>. Eventually he reclaimed his throne and hadn’t he died in the Battle of Stamford Bridge<\/a> history might have taken completely different turns…<\/p>\n

Playing Harald of Norway yourself in the “1066: Year of Viking Destiny” Scenario, with no risk of dying in the process, you will successfully invade England and won’t even stop there!!!<\/p>\n

Purple People Eaters – Strategy<\/h2>\n

Although you might not need reinforcements at the start, I’ll start with the build order for home regardless:<\/p>\n

Build order<\/h3>\n

I tried with every faction so far, but even on Deity difficulty you will conquer cities faster than you can build\/buy Markets or Workshops, so don’t waste time building Ironworks or National Treasury<\/strong>. Instead: Start producing Berserker straight away!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Trondheim<\/th>\nBergen<\/th>\nTunsberg<\/th>\nAll Scottish cities<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
1. Berserker
\n(configure Trondheim to maximize production while maintaining growth)<\/td>\n		1. Worker
\n(Bergen needs a worker to improve the land, then optimize for production and growth)<\/td>\n		1. Forge
\n(you’ll want to work both Iron as quickly as possible, but you need to grow Tunsberg first, to do so)<\/td>\n		1. Lighthouse
\n(I chose the same build order for all these cities. In Iona I bought a workshop.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n(to improve all land around those cities)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

When the above states build Military units, of course it means: Berserker first! As long as you have Iron, and assuming you’ll conquer cities following my guidance, you’ll always have plenty Iron!!! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Even to Europeans the term “Purple People Eaters<\/a>” sounds familiar, although nobody over here knows where it originates. The Purple People Eaters were the defensive line of the Minnesota Vikings, an NFL club that revolutionized the meaning of defense in American Football. Their motto apparently was “Meet at the Quarterback”.<\/p>\n

Defense is the best offense. A thing that generally holds true in most Civilization 5 scenarios, but playing Norway, you’ll be more offensive than with any other faction in the Year of Viking Destiny.<\/p>\n

Combat Tactics<\/h3>\n

Similar to playing William the Conqueror<\/a> and his Norman Knights, the Viking strategy is simple and straightforward: Berserks, Berserks and Berserks! Even unpromoted Berserks will be able to capture a city without losses. Also: They’re strong enough to endure some ranged attacks from cities and defending units. Furthermore they have 3 Movement points, so you can even cross a forest or hill or stay out of city range and attack with several Berserks at once.<\/p>\n

The thing is though: Berserks cost Iron, of which you have limited supply. If you follow my strategy and capture the Northern City States though, you won’t have a problem producing only Berserks<\/strong> in your 3 Norwegian cities until the end of the game.<\/p>\n

Chronology of Conquests<\/h3>\n

During your conquest you won’t have much time to improve any infrastructure. However there are 3 important roads to be built. I’ve highlighted<\/strong> these below. Also check out the Viking Destiny scenario map<\/a> and see for yourself why those roads are fundamentally important.<\/p>\n
