And what a great scenario the setting makes: Dreams of Wealth and Power. Over centuries The Americas have inspired Europeans to take on the perilous journey across the ocean into the unknown. Me and my imagination&nbsp;first encountered the New World during my childhood in books by Karl May and others. Obviously the Conquest of the New World describes&nbsp;a period 200-300 years prior to that: Early colonization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Searching for a nice cover image now, I re-discovered &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conquest_of_the_New_World\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conquest of the New World<\/a>&#8220;, another 90s classic PC game:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conquest of the New World (1996) - Gameplay\" width=\"688\" height=\"516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nbSt10LNlMQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>But back to Civilization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This scenario reenacts the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_colonization_of_the_Americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">European colonization of the Americas<\/a>. Not the first abandoned settlements&nbsp;founded by the <a href=\"\/blog\/civilization-5-viking-destiny-scenario-strategy-achievement-guide\/\">Vikings<\/a>. It&#8217;s all about the extensive colonization following Christopher Columbus in 1492 through the seafaring nations of Europe. The scenario ends after 150 turns in the year 1702.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conquest of the New World scenario features 8 Steam Achievements and originally 6, later (deluxe) 10 playable civilizations. The Map is generated dynamically&nbsp;each time. Europe is a constant, but the Americas (both North and South) are different each time. Treasures are special units, appearing whenever a city is captured (and razed).<\/li><li>Gold per Turn (for Europeans)<\/li><li>Faith per Turn (for <a href=\"\/blog\/civilization-5-conquest-of-the-new-world-scenario-native-american-strategy\/\">Native Americans<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the fact that treasures provide extraordinarily many points and are available in unlimited supply, conquest itself seems to be the single best Conquest of the New World strategy for winning. Imagine: 10 razed cities, regardless of how&nbsp;<em>small<\/em> they are, will grant you 1.000 VP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conquest of the New World&nbsp;Steam VP<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conquest of the New World Strategy for all Steam Achievements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing as the Europeans you will see that all strategy guides advocate the same strategy: Conquer Europe, then annihilate the European competitors in the New World, then score VP by capturing Native American cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing the Native American civilizations &#8212; I haven&#8217;t found the #1 strategy yet and I doubt there is one. But there are factors that will strongly contribute to winning or lower your chance if they&#8217;re not checked. <a href=\"\/blog\/civilization-5-conquest-of-the-new-world-scenario-native-american-strategy\/\">You&#8217;ll find those factors here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conquest of the New World &#8211; Factions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The original version of this scenario features the three dominant Europeans colonizing the New World: <a href=\"\/blog\/conquest-new-world-siglo-oro-steam-achievement-guide\/\">Spain<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/conquest-new-world-tea-crumpets-everyone-steam-achievement-guide\/\">England<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/conquest-new-world-tout-le-monde-francophone-steam-achievement-guide\/\">France<\/a>. On the native side there&#8217;s the respective three dominant civilizations, namely the <a href=\"\/blog\/conquest-new-world-league-extraordinary-hoyanehs-steam-achievement\/\">Iroquois<\/a>, representing Northern American Indians, as well as traditional <a href=\"\/blog\/conquest-of-the-new-world-huitzilopochtlis-arrow-steam-achievement-guide\/\">Aztecs<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/conquest-of-the-new-world-macho-picchu-steam-achievement-guide\/\">Incas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each of those civilizations there is a Steam Achievements, linked and described above. For the Civs added in the Deluxe Version, no Steam Achievements were added. The Terrace Farm provides&nbsp;<strong>plenty<\/strong> of food, but unfortunately especially on higher difficulty levels you need to cap population due to unhappiness, so you can&#8217;t use this to it&#8217;s full potential. They can be built next to lakes, are cheaper and provide an additional +15% food and extra 2 food on lakes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the bottom line the Aztec unique abilities are amongst the biggest advantages. This scenario comes with additional civilizations: The Netherlands and Portugal round up the group of colonizing nations and both actually played a big role in the history of the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the side of the American Natives the Shoshone create a bit of diversity in North America whilst the Mayas complete the &#8220;usual suspects&#8221; of American civilizations. Not only will it be easier to defend against other Native American civs, the bonus is also helpful against the Europeans. Additional Food and Faith is great! Plains are everywhere, so the Shoshone have good chances to endure the struggle vs. the Europeans. My main focus in siding with them is of course Cultural City States, since they give your culture a tremendous boost, essential for unlocking higher tier policies quicker. Next in line is at your will, but I find that militaristic CS provide the lowest value, since the units you&#8217;ll receive are inferior to anything you (and other civs) can build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the list including links to the historical cities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inuit\" target=\"_blank\">Inuit<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Cultured<\/strong><\/span>)<br>Inuits live in Greenland and the Canadian arctic. There&#8217;s two more tribes living in the arctic Alaska and the three together are called Eskimo!<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yanomami\" target=\"_blank\">Yanomami<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Cultured<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Yanomami live in the Amazon basin and have only had contact with other civilizations in 1759!<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muisca_people\" target=\"_blank\">Muisca<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Cultured<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Muisca are a group of indigenous inhabitants of the central highlands of Colombia. Since the conquest when their numbers had been between 0.5 and 3 million people, Muisca population as dwindled down to ~14.000.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hopi\" target=\"_blank\">Hopi<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Cultured<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Hopi are an Indian tribe around 19.000 strong, living in Arizona.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancestral_Puebloans\" target=\"_blank\">Anasazi<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Cultured<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Anasazi are an ancient native American culture known for having build the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seminole\" target=\"_blank\">Seminole<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Militaristic<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Seminoles are one Florida&#8217;s indigenous people.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lakota_people\" target=\"_blank\">Lakota<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Militaristic<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Lakotas together with several other Sioux tribes for a confederation in North and South Dakota.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee\" target=\"_blank\">Cherokee<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\"><strong>Militaristic<\/strong><\/span>)<br>The Cherokee are a group of native Americans of the southeastern Unites States. The new technologies are nice, but easy. The social policy trees are great and well balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that I&#8217;ve played with all civilizations, I can say the scenario could and should be a bit more versatile: The very same Conquest of the New World strategy works for all Europeans and a second strategy (including starting conditions) work for all Native civilizations.
